New car sales had a record-breaking month as they had the highest August result on record as Australians took delivery of 109,966 new cars, a 15.4 per cent increase on the same period in 2022.
August car sales increased 18.7 per cent on the five-year August average before the pandemic (92,626 VS 109,966). This brings the year-to-date sales total to 788,584 which is a 9.9 per cent increase compared to August 2022.
Vehicles ordered months before arrived in bigger numbers and production delays continuedto ease across the car industry. These results mark the fifth month in a row of increasing new car sales.
The top-selling car was the Toyota HiLux with 5,762, which is just a hair more than the second highest-selling car, the Ford Ranger with 5,760 units sold. See the end for a list of the top 10 selling car models for August 2023.
FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said back-to-back months of record-breaking new car sales was positive news for car manufacturers and consumers.
“The Australian automotive sector continues to demonstrate its strength, with August recording unprecedented sales figures, reflecting both a high level of demand from Australians and improved supply of vehicles.
“Year-to-date sales have increased 9.9 per cent which is a better indicator of the underlying strength of the market.” Mr Weber said.
The market leader, Toyota, set an August record as they saw sales increase by 8.3 per cent last month compared to August 2022, which came after seven consecutive months in decline due to production challenges and shipping slowdowns.
In March this year, Toyota noted a 39 per cent year-on-year sales drop. The car maker says demand for its cars is still high though not necessarily at the same level it observed during the pandemic. It says that it is on target for better production in the upcoming months compared to the beginning of this year. See the end for the top ten car brands in August 2023.
Following Toyota were Mazda, Ford, Hyundai, and Kia to round out the top five car manufacturers in August 2023.
The sale of SUVs increased by 28.3 per cent (13,742 vehicles) while light commercial vehicles increased by 6.9 per cent (1,559 vehicles) compared to August 2022. The passenger vehicle market decreased by 3.3 per cent (661 vehicles) compared to the same time last year.
Mr Weber added that electric vehicles accounted for 6.4 per cent of sales and hybrid vehicles accounted for 10.5 per cent of sales in August.
“As consumers continue to embrace low emissions technologies we are seeing growth in electric, plug-in and hybrid vehicle sales. More than 1 in 6 vehicles sold in the month of August featured low emissions technologies.”
