Top-selling cars in June 2023

For the past few years, the Toyota HiLux and Ford Ranger have been the top two most-sold cars in Australia each month.

Last June that changed.

Tesla’s Model Y knocked the Ford Ranger out of its perch to be the second most purchased new car in Australia for June 2023.

The most purchased new car was Toyota’s HiLux with 6,142 units sold. Tesla’s Model Y finished with 5,560 while the Ford Ranger came in third place with 5,334 cars sold.

The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) anticipates the sales growth of EVs will continue to grow.

“The early adopters of the new powertrain technology continue to push up the sales of electric vehicles across the country,” FCAI Chief Executive Tony Weber said.

“The steady introduction of new battery electric models across all model segments at more competitive price points is critically important as we deal with the challenges of supplying electric vehicles that meet business and personal consumer needs at prices the mainstream buyers can afford,” Mr Weber said.

Electric car sales accounted for 8.8 per cent of June sales and 7.4 per cent of sales for the first half of the year.

The cheapest electric cars arrived in June which include the BYD Dolphin and MG 4, with pricing below $40,000 before on-road costs.

The end of the financial year saw strong sales growth with 124,926 new cars sold, an increase of 25 per cent compared to June 2022, the highest June result since 2018.
