New car sales officially hit one million in October as all-time sales records were continuously smashed this year.
Last month in October there was a delivery of 106,809 new vehicles to Australians. The top-selling car for October was the Ford Ranger with 6,215 vehicles delivered to Australians, bridging the gap with the Toyota HiLux.
Year-to-date the Toyota HiLux is dominating with 50,067 cars sold while the Ford Ranger follows with 49,2878. Refer to the list at the end for the top ten selling cars for October 2023.
FCAI Chief Executive, Tony Weber, said this record was due to the unwavering demand for a variety of cars across different price brackets.
“The Australian market has demonstrated incredible strength and vitality throughout 2023, culminating in Australia reaching one million sales in October for the first time,” Mr Weber said.
“After some challenging years through COVID, this milestone speaks to the range of vehicles available to consumers, affirming Australia’s position as one of the world’s most dynamic and competitive markets. It also reflects vastly improved supply chains.”
In the past six months, five of those new car sales broke all-time sales figures compared with previous years.
A hefty 38.3 per cent of sales were in light commercial utes and large or upper large SUVs while electric vehicles represented 5.7 per cent of the market.
Sales in every State and Territory increased this month when compared with October 2022. This comes as dealers begin to catch up with orders from previous months that were backlogged due to supply issues.
The most popular car brand in October was Toyota with 20,298 sales. Trailing in second place was Mazda with 9,316 and Ford in third with 8,605.
